A scholarly community begins with transparent participation.

JHELA is developing an international, English-language forum for educational inquiry in which methodological standards, contextual interpretation and human consequences are considered together. This public dashboard brings its scholarly direction and participation routes into one place.

Four routes into the journal

Explore the part of JHELA relevant to your work

Scholarly publishing depends on different responsibilities at different stages. The journal therefore distinguishes participation in methodological review, editorial governance, authorship and the reading of published research. Select a role to view its expectations and next steps.

Serve as a prospective scholarly reviewer

Reviewers assess whether research questions, theoretical assumptions, methods and interpretations form a defensible whole. A constructive report should identify strengths, limitations and possible revisions without allowing theoretical preference or professional proximity to substitute for evidence.

Expressions of interest should communicate disciplinary knowledge, methodological competence and institutional or publication details that can be verified. Acceptance into a prospective reviewer network does not automatically confer board membership or indicate that any manuscript has been assigned.

Critical evaluation should remain proportionate to the research design and question.

Contribute to editorial formation and governance

The proposed international editorial community requires more than recognised affiliations. Editors must be able to engage with the journal's intellectual scope, assign qualified reviewers without material conflicts, evaluate competing assessments and preserve authors' procedural rights.

Expressions of interest from qualified education researchers, applied linguists and methodological specialists are welcome. Proposed roles will be defined before appointment, and names will appear publicly only after the scholar has accepted the responsibilities and confirmed the relevant affiliation.

Prepare research for an international scholarly readership

JHELA's prospective remit includes educational assessment, language education, teacher professional development, curriculum and materials, equitable learning opportunities, human-centred educational technology and research methodology. Authors should relate their inquiry to relevant scholarship, articulate their evidence and interpret the limitations and potential transferability of findings.

Work from distinct local settings is welcome when contextual conditions are explained rather than hidden. The journal will not equate international relevance with context-free generalisations, nor will claims of novelty replace a reasoned contribution to existing knowledge.

Follow the emerging scholarly record

The journal's first issue is under preparation. Its current-issue and archive pages intentionally contain no fabricated articles or retrospective volume records. Once actual research completes independent editorial review and publication, each paper should have stable bibliographic metadata, authorship information, full-text access and an accountable correction history.

Readers and institutions are invited to examine the founding policies now, while distinguishing the journal's aspirations from completed publishing activities or formal indexing decisions.

A shared scholarly direction

In the journal's developing editorial approach, the quality of educational research depends on a visible relationship between the claim being made, the evidence available and the circumstances of interpretation. While technical measurement and reproducible analysis are important, their value is not independent of the people and institutions affected by the resulting judgements. Conversely, a focus on educational experience should not license claims beyond the study's empirical or conceptual foundations.

JHELA therefore aims to support research that brings disciplinary traditions into critical dialogue. It is particularly interested in studies that clarify how assessment instruments operate in practice, how teachers exercise professional judgement, how educational materials shape opportunities to learn, and how contextual differences influence what can reasonably be inferred from a finding. These interests remain an editorial direction rather than evidence of completed publication activity.
